Physiotherapy vs Chiropractic: What's the Difference?
Both physiotherapy and chiropractic care can help with musculoskeletal issues, but they differ in approach and philosophy.
When dealing with back pain, neck pain, or other musculoskeletal issues, Malaysians often wonder whether to see a physiotherapist or a chiropractor. Both professions aim to reduce pain and improve function, but they take different approaches.
Physiotherapy: Evidence-Based Movement Rehabilitation
Physiotherapy focuses on restoring movement and function through exercise, manual therapy, and education. Physiotherapists are trained to treat a wide range of conditions including sports injuries, neurological conditions (like stroke), respiratory problems, and post-surgical rehabilitation. Treatment typically involves a combination of hands-on therapy and prescribed exercises that patients perform independently.
Chiropractic: Spinal Adjustment Focus
Chiropractic care centres primarily on the spine and its alignment. Chiropractors use spinal adjustments (manipulations) to correct misalignments that they believe cause pain and dysfunction. Treatment sessions often focus on the adjustment itself, though many chiropractors also incorporate other modalities.
Key Differences
Scope of practice: Physiotherapists treat conditions across the entire body and multiple systems (musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular). Chiropractors primarily focus on spinal and joint conditions.
Treatment approach: Physiotherapy emphasises active rehabilitation — teaching patients exercises and strategies to manage their condition long-term. Chiropractic tends to be more practitioner-dependent, with regular adjustment sessions.
Regulation in Malaysia: Physiotherapists in Malaysia must be registered under the Allied Health Professions Act. This ensures standardised training and professional accountability.
Which Should You Choose?
For sports injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, stroke recovery, or conditions requiring exercise-based treatment, physiotherapy is generally the recommended choice. For acute back or neck pain related to spinal alignment, some patients find chiropractic care helpful. When in doubt, consult your doctor for a referral to the most appropriate specialist.
