SOCSO – known as PERKESO (Pertubuhan Keselamatan Sosial) in Bahasa Malaysia – provides social security protection for Malaysian employees, including coverage for physiotherapy when injuries are work-related. Here is everything you need to know about accessing these benefits.
Who is Eligible?
You are eligible for SOCSO physiotherapy benefits if you are an employee who contributes to SOCSO (mandatory for employees earning RM5,000 or less per month, voluntary for those earning more) and have sustained a work-related injury or been diagnosed with an occupational disease.
What is Covered?
SOCSO covers physiotherapy as part of its rehabilitation program for work-related injuries and occupational diseases. This includes assessment, treatment sessions, and rehabilitation programs prescribed by a SOCSO panel doctor or specialist. Coverage typically includes both clinic-based and hospital-based physiotherapy.
Step-by-Step Claim Process
- Report the Injury: Report your workplace injury to your employer immediately. Your employer must submit the Employer's Report of Accident (Form 21) to SOCSO within 48 hours.
- Seek Medical Treatment: Visit a SOCSO panel doctor or hospital for initial treatment and diagnosis. The doctor will assess your condition and determine if physiotherapy is needed.
- Get a Referral: The treating doctor will refer you to a physiotherapy provider within the SOCSO network if rehabilitation is required.
- Attend Sessions: Attend your physiotherapy sessions as prescribed. Keep all appointment records and progress notes.
- Claims Processing: Your physiotherapy provider will typically bill SOCSO directly. In some cases, you may need to submit claim forms with receipts for reimbursement.
Important Things to Know
- SOCSO covers physiotherapy costs for the duration deemed medically necessary by the treating specialist
- You may also be eligible for temporary disablement benefit (paid medical leave) while undergoing rehabilitation
- If your workplace injury results in permanent disability, SOCSO provides additional benefits including ongoing rehabilitation support
- Self-employed individuals who voluntarily contribute to SOCSO may also access these benefits
Common Workplace Injuries Requiring Physiotherapy
The most common work-related conditions that benefit from physiotherapy include lower back injuries from manual handling, carpal tunnel syndrome from repetitive computer use, shoulder injuries from overhead work, and slip-and-fall injuries affecting knees and ankles.
