Osteoporosis
Treatment & Physiotherapy

Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle, increasing fracture risk especially in older Malaysian women. Physiotherapy helps manage osteoporosis through weight-bearing exercises, balance training, and posture correction to strengthen bones and prevent falls.

Common Symptoms of Osteoporosis

Back pain from compression fractures
Loss of height over time
Stooped or rounded posture
Fractures from minor falls or bumps
Reduced physical activity due to fear of falling

Symptom Severity Profile

* Typical severity profile. Individual symptoms may vary.

What Causes Osteoporosis?

Postmenopausal estrogen deficiency causing rapid bone mineral density loss in women over 50
Age-related decline in bone remodeling with osteoclast activity exceeding osteoblast bone formation
Inadequate dietary calcium and vitamin D intake reducing bone mineralization throughout life
Physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle reducing the mechanical stimulus for bone formation
Long-term corticosteroid use, hyperthyroidism, or other medical conditions affecting bone metabolism

When Should You See a Physiotherapist for Osteoporosis?

You should consider seeing a physiotherapist if your osteoporosis symptoms have persisted for more than a few days, are affecting your daily activities, or are getting worse over time. Early intervention typically leads to faster recovery and better outcomes.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience sudden, severe pain, numbness or tingling in your limbs, loss of bladder or bowel control, or symptoms following a significant trauma. These may indicate a more serious condition requiring urgent medical evaluation.

Physiotherapy Treatments for Osteoporosis

Weight-bearing and resistance exercises
Balance and fall prevention training
Posture correction exercises
Spinal extension strengthening
Home safety assessment and modification

Recommended Exercises for Osteoporosis

These exercises are commonly recommended by physiotherapists. Always consult a professional before starting any exercise program.

1
Standing Hip Abduction – Stand holding a chair for support and lift one leg out to the side to hip height, hold for 3 seconds and slowly lower to strengthen the hip and stimulate femoral bone density
2
Heel Raises – Stand behind a chair and rise up onto the tiptoes and slowly lower to strengthen the calves and improve bone loading through the ankle and tibia
3
Spinal Extension in Prone – Lie face down with arms by the sides and gently lift the upper chest off the floor, hold for 5 seconds to strengthen the spinal extensors and reduce kyphotic posture
4
Single Leg Stance Balance – Stand on one leg near a wall for support and hold for 10–30 seconds to improve balance and reduce fall risk
5
Resistance Band Squats – Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and slowly bend the knees to a quarter-squat position and return to standing to build lower limb strength and bone density

Your Recovery Timeline

Weeks 1–2

Assessment and Education

Bone density review, fall risk assessment, posture evaluation, and education on calcium and vitamin D intake, safe movements, and home hazard modification

Weeks 3–6

Balance and Gentle Strengthening

Balance training, gentle weight-bearing exercises, postural correction, and introduction of safe resistance exercises to begin stimulating bone formation

Weeks 7–14

Progressive Weight-Bearing Exercise

Graduated increase in resistance and weight-bearing activities, spinal extension strengthening, and functional movement training for daily activities

Ongoing

Long-Term Maintenance

Independent home exercise program with at least 3–4 sessions per week, community group exercise participation, and annual physiotherapy review to monitor progress

Expected Recovery Curve

* Estimates based on typical recovery timelines. Individual results may vary.

People Also Ask About Osteoporosis

What causes osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis can be caused by various factors including injury, overuse, poor posture, age-related changes, and underlying medical conditions. A thorough physiotherapy assessment can help identify the specific cause in your case.

How long does physiotherapy take to treat osteoporosis?

Treatment duration varies depending on the severity and chronicity of your osteoporosis. Most patients see improvement within 4-8 sessions, though some conditions may require ongoing management. Your physiotherapist will discuss a personalized treatment plan during your first session.

Can osteoporosis be treated without surgery?

In many cases, yes. Physiotherapy is often the first-line treatment for osteoporosis and can be highly effective without the need for surgery. Evidence-based techniques such as manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, and lifestyle modifications can significantly reduce symptoms.

How much does physiotherapy for osteoporosis cost in Malaysia?

Physiotherapy session costs in Malaysia typically range from RM100 to RM250+ per session, depending on the location, type of treatment, and duration. Many insurance plans cover physiotherapy. Contact us via WhatsApp for specific pricing information.

Should I see a physiotherapist or doctor for osteoporosis?

Both can help. If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or are experiencing persistent symptoms, a physiotherapist can provide specialized treatment. For new or severe symptoms, seeing a doctor first for diagnosis is recommended, and they may refer you to physiotherapy.
