Benefits

  • Reduces stress and lowers blood pressure
  • Improves oxygen exchange and breathing efficiency
  • Enhances core stability through diaphragm training
  • Essential exercise for post-COVID respiratory recovery

How to Perform

  1. 1

Lie on your back or sit comfortably. Place one hand on your chest and one on your abdomen.

  2. 2

Breathe in slowly through your nose for 4 seconds. Your abdomen should rise while your chest stays relatively still.

Tip: If your chest rises more than your belly, focus on directing the breath downward.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between diaphragmatic breathing and normal breathing?

Normal breathing often uses the chest and accessory muscles (shallow breathing), while diaphragmatic breathing focuses on using the diaphragm – the large dome-shaped muscle below the lungs. In diaphragmatic breathing, the abdomen expands on inhalation rather than the chest. This pattern is more efficient and activates the calming parasympathetic nervous system.

Can diaphragmatic breathing help with anxiety?

Yes, diaphragmatic breathing is one of the most evidence-supported techniques for anxiety management. Slow, deep diaphragmatic breathing activates the vagus nerve and parasympathetic nervous system, which directly counteracts the fight-or-flight response. Practice for 5-10 minutes daily for best results.

How does diaphragmatic breathing help post-COVID recovery?

COVID-19 can cause lung damage and respiratory muscle weakness. Diaphragmatic breathing retrains the breathing pattern, strengthens the diaphragm, improves lung capacity, and reduces breathlessness. It is an essential part of pulmonary rehabilitation programs for long COVID patients.
